In Their Own Words: Johanna Mercier
The V Foundation is successful thanks to the contributions of many: donors, corporate partners, our incredible Board and Scientific Advisory Committee and the amazing researchers to whom we award grants. With “In Their Own Words,” we sit down with key members of our team to learn more about their commitment to the V Foundation and their personal desire to put an end to cancer. In this edition, we chat with Johanna Mercier, Head of U.S. and Large Markets, Worldwide Commercial, Bristol-Myers Squibb and a participant in the company’s Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer (C2C4C) Ride, which raises funds for cancer research in support of the V Foundation.
The V Foundation: How has cancer affected you personally?
Johanna Mercier: Too many of us have been affected by cancer: either directly or knowing and supporting loved ones diagnosed with the disease. I joined Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer this year inspired by many loved ones, but mostly by my mom. My mother’s always been my biggest inspiration and my strongest supporter. I’ll never forget the day our family received the news that she had been diagnosed with cancer. She battled and we tried to stay positive through the ups and downs of her treatment. Now, I’m thrilled to say that she is a 10-year breast cancer survivor.
TVF: Why is it important to you that Bristol-Myers Squibb is committed to supporting cancer research?
JM: As a community, we’ve made tremendous progress in cancer research, but there is much more to be done so that more people who are diagnosed with cancer can live longer and lead more active lives. That’s why I’m proud of the research being done at Bristol-Myers Squibb, through the V Foundation and throughout the cancer community. After participating in this year’s Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer ride and hearing the stories of my fellow riders and teammates, I’ve never been more proud to be a part of an organization that works so hard to support people living with cancer.
TVF: How do all the Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer riders inspire the rest of the Bristol-Myers Squibb staff?
JM: Over the past five years, the Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer ride has served as an incredible source of inspiration and motivation for our entire organization. This ride reminds us, personally and collectively, who we are working for every day, and inspires us by the hope that victory over cancer is possible.
