In Their Own Words: Sam Young

The V Foundation is successful thanks to the contributions of many: donors, corporate partners, our incredible Board and Scientific Advisory Committee and the amazing researchers to whom we award grants. With “In Their Own Words,” we sit down with key members of our team to learn more about their commitment to the V Foundation and their personal desire to put an end to cancer. In this edition, we chat with Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Sam Young. We recently announced a new partnership with ESPN, the Dolphins and the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Miami. The V Foundation: How has cancer affected your life personally?

Sam  Young: I’ve had family members, friends, and loved ones affected by cancer. Seeing them fight against the disease has impacted me personally an it is all the more reason why I want to be involved in helping find a cure and help others battle cancer.

TVF: How meaningful is it to you that the Dolphins organization is so invested in funding cancer research?

SY: The Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC) is extremely meaningful, especially with the funds going to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and knowing that every dollar raised is going directly to fight cancer through research and development. It’s great that it’s being reinvested back into the local community.

TVF: Why are partnerships like this so important?

SY: The partnership between the DCC and the V Foundation is great because it helps bring awareness to the cause and raise more funds to aid researchers. It was great to see the announcement made before Monday Night Football, and I think it provided a lot of momentum before DCC VIII in February as well.

TVF: What words of encouragement would you offer to someone who is dealing with cancer?

SY: Just keep fighting. Try to maintain a positive attitude no matter what. Look for support from your loved ones and know that there are people on your side battling to find a cure.

TVF: What does “Victory Over Cancer” look like to you?

SY: A Victory Over Cancer is finding a cure. With partnerships like the one between the DCC and the V Foundation, we’re making powerful strides and giving funds to great organizations like Sylvester. They are, every day, taking steps towards beating this disease.
