In Their Own Words: Jarrius Robertson
The V Foundation is successful thanks to the contributions of many: donors, corporate partners, our incredible Board and Scientific Advisory Committee and the amazing researchers to whom we award grants. With “In Their Own Words,” we sit down with key members of our team to learn more about their commitment to the V Foundation and their personal desire to put an end to cancer. In this edition, we chat with this year’s ESPYS Jimmy V Perseverance Award Winner, New Orleans superfan Jarrius Robertson.
The V Foundation: Congratulations on being honored with this year’s Jimmy V Perseverance Award. What was your reaction when you found out you would receive this award?
Jarrius Robertson: When I heard I was winning an ESPY, I couldn’t believe it. When I learned more about the V Foundation and the inspirational people that have won before me like Eric LeGrand, Stuart Scott and Craig Sager? Man, I was honored. It’s a blessing.
Live life like there is no tomorrow. Help make people laugh and smile to let them know you enjoy being around them.
TVF: You’ll now get to attend the ESPYS. What are you most looking forward to about that experience?
JR: I have met a lot of cool people over the last year but the ESPYS is next level! I am excited to see who all will be there. I am also pumped to be given such a big stage to share my message of “It Takes Lives to Save Lives.”
TVF: You have been through some hard times at a young age. What advice would you give other young people going through a rough patch?
JR: We will all go through tough times but I promise you every day is a blessing. Make the most of it. Live life like there is no tomorrow. Help make people laugh and smile to let them know you enjoy being around them.
TVF: You are a big fan of the New Orleans Saints. How has being a Saints fan helped you through some of the tough times in your life?
JR: They have treated me like family since the day I met some of the players. I feel like I am on the team. I always tell my coach, Sean Payton, I am number one on the roster! When I was in the hospital recovering from the transplant, they visited, called, sent gifts and tweeted support to me. It helped a lot!
TVF: You certainly embody our found Jim Valvano’s “Don’t Ever Give Up” spirit. What does “Don’t Ever Give Up” mean to you?
JR: It means always believing you can overcome anything. Even when I didn’t know if I would ever get the liver transplant, I always believed it would work out. Just know that no matter how tough it gets, you have to keep fighting!
