The V Foundation for Cancer Research Announces Eighth Annual Dick Vitale Gala
College Coaching Greats Bill Self, Jim Calhoun and Bobby Bowden to be Honored at Event
The V Foundation for Cancer Research, one of the nation’s leading cancer research funding organizations, is excited to announce the Eighth Annual Dick Vitale Gala. The Gala, hosted by ESPN’s Hall of Fame Sportscaster Dick Vitale, will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013, at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota, Florida. University of Kansas’ head men’s basketball coach Bill Self, former University of Connecticut and Hall of Fame college basketball coach Jim Calhoun, and former Florida State University and Hall of Fame college football coach Bobby Bowden will be honored during the event. Net proceeds of the event will be awarded to pediatric cancer research and related programs through The V Foundation.
“I am so touched by all of the sports celebrities who donate their time to assist us in striving to make Jimmy V’s dream a reality,” said Dick Vitale. “We all must unite to battle this dreaded disease. In Jimmy’s famous ESPY speech he mentioned that during every day we should all think, and be filled with enough emotion to make us laugh and cry. I am sure we will not let Jimmy down as we once again experience the electricity of the evening and join together at this fantastic event.”
Last year, the Gala raised a record $2.1 million for pediatric cancer research, bringing the total of funds raised to $8.6 million since the event’s inception in 2006. Now in its eighth year, the Gala routinely draws many sports and entertainment celebrities to Sarasota including several NCAA men’s basketball coaches.
“The Dick Vitale Gala is an amazing event. It is lively and entertaining, and also poignant and meaningful,” said Susan Braun, CEO of The V Foundation. “Helping fight children’s cancer is a passion for Dick and Lorraine Vitale, and it is important and inspired work. We are honored by the generosity that everyone shows The V Foundation.”
The evening will begin with a cocktail hour at 6:30 p.m. and include after-party entertainment from The Temptations Review, featuring former lead singer of The Temptations, Dennis Edwards. Tickets for the Gala start at $1,000 with sponsorship opportunities available starting at $12,500. A raffle drawing for a Mars Red Mercedes E350A convertible will occur during the Gala. Tickets for the raffle are $100 and are available now. Winners do not need to be in attendance at the Gala for the drawing.
