“Don’t Give Up… Don’t Ever Give Up” Authors Win 47th Georgia Author of the Year Award

We are so excited to announce that the authors of “Don’t Give Up… Don’t Ever Give Up” have been chosen to receive the 47th Georgia Author of the Year Award in the Inspirational category. Justin Spizman, sports fanatic and Jimmy V admirer joined up with his mother, Robyn Spizman, a New York Times Best Selling Author, to explore and expand upon Jimmy V’s 1993 ESPY speech. The speech, only 11 minutes in length, sparked a movement against cancer.

Contest judge Patricia Cordona says this mother-son duo wrote a book that “continues to remind us of how one person’s thoughts and desires can truly make a difference.”

With the help of Nick Valvano, The V Foundation’s CEO, Justin and Robyn were able to include glimpses into the life of Jimmy V while also highlighting the main lessons that we should take from Jimmy V’s infamous speech.

The book, listed as “Don’t Give Up… Don’t Ever Give Up: The Inspiration of Jimmy V—One Coach, 11 Minutes and an Uncommon Look at the Game of Life” can be purchased on Amazon.com. This book is a refreshing and inspirational mix of stories and lessons that Jim Valvano wanted to share with the world.

Community Events on a Roll

We talk a lot about the impact that community events have on the success of The V Foundation. All over the country individuals, families and corporations put in enormous amounts of time and energy to get us closer to fulfilling Jim Valvano’s dream of finding a cure for cancer. We have compiled some information about the past year’s grassroots efforts and wanted to share a few fun details with you.

Could you guess that the most popular grassroots events in the past year were basketball tournaments? We think Jimmy V would be so excited! Other events that were close in popularity were walking and running events and golf tournaments. The most popular location for grassroots fundraisers was North Carolina, which hosted 12.91 percent of the events. The second most popular was New York, holding 8.6 of the year’s grassroots events.

Of course we need to take this opportunity to boast of the success of The Delta Chi Fraternity, Inc. that raised more than $94,000 for The V Foundation in the past year. Delta Chi named The V Foundation it’s preferred philanthropic organization in 2006 and has been such a huge factor in The V Foundation’s success.

Of course all of the grassroots fundraisers are imperative in the fight against cancer and one of the most exciting parts of our job is to see the events that people like you come up with. We truly appreciate all of the work that goes into these fundraisers and continue to be surprised and touched with the new ideas and events that are registered to benefit The V Foundation.

This information is based on events held between March 1, 2010-February 28, 2011.

Share Your V Story

We all experience those days when we need a little inspiration. The next time one of those rolls around, be sure to check out the “Share Your V Story” section of our website. It is a touching collection of stories written and published on the website from people whose paths have crossed with The V Foundation.

The V Foundation relies on these stories to remind us why we work so hard to find a cure. Your stories remind us that we are not connected to millions of people because of cancer; we are connected through the hope that cancer will end. Take some time out of your day to explore some of the stories or post one of your own. The power of these stories gives us and our supporters the motivation to keep searching for the cure.

Bring Charity to the Office!

Summer is here so time so let’s turn up the heat in the fight against cancer in the workplace. Companies can support The V Foundation in a number of ways on both a national or local level. Corporations can help The V Foundation create an event, sponsor an existing event or even get involved in a workplace initiative like “Show Your Spirit.”

We know you are busy and that your company is unique, so let us help put together a customized opportunity for your corporation to get involved with The V Foundation. For more information about how to get your company involved email Larry Lane, our vice president of corporate relations at [email protected]
