ESPN and The V Foundation partnered to stage and televise the inaugural Jimmy V Women’s Basketball Classic in 2002 and the event has become a premier early-season women's college event.

This year, the seventh annual Jimmy V Women's Basketball Classic will feature Georgia vs. Rutgers at the Louis Brown Atlethic Center at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Tickets are available through Rutgers University and can be purchased by calling 866-445-GORU.

North Carolina and Connecticut squared off in the 2005 Jimmy V Women's Basketball Classic at the Hartford Civic Center on December 5, with the seventh-ranked Tar Heels upending the eighth-ranked Huskies, 77-54.

In 2004, the third annual Jimmy V Women’s Basketball Classic featured ninth-ranked North Carolina knocking off No. 4 UConn and No. 1 Tennessee fighting off N.C. State on November 21, 2004, at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C. The proceeds from the event helped fund a $50,000 ovarian cancer research grant awarded to Dr. Paola Gehrig at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
