Take it for a spin…

Spring has arrived! Even though there is some pollen out there, there is nothing like driving around town with the sun shining and the car window down. You know what would be even more fun? Riding around town in a Mars Red Mercedes E350A.  The 7th annual Dick Vitale Gala has an extra twist this year. By making a suggested donation to The V Foundation of $100, you can be entered in the raffle to win this amazing car. But you better hurry, tickets are going fast and there are only a limited amount of raffle tickets. Only 1,500 raffle [...]

Give me a “V” Five!

In 2002, a group of friends at the University of Virginia decided to give out high fives and lemonade in the main quad of campus. For the past ten years on the third Thursday in April, people have been giving high fives on this day to support cancer research. This year, a portion of the donations raised will be going to The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Now I know what you are thinking, how does the fact that I give someone a high five, help raise money for cancer…easy. Go to the website and click join the National High-5-A-Thon [...]

Lions, Tigers and Bears or Lungs, Thyroids and Breasts- Oh my!

For this blog, I have decided to write my ode to types of cancer we fund. Be prepared, I like to rhyme.  There is not one type of cancer we fund,                                                               When some people hear this, they are quite stunned. Cancer research is what we are all about,                                           [...]

Leaving a Legacy…

This topic is not very easy to talk about. When you talk about leaving The V Foundation in your will or estate plans, it can be a very delicate subject. The V Foundation has a distinctive group of caring people who have named The V Foundation in their wills. By doing this, these people are members of the Legacy of Hope Society. As a member of the Legacy of Hope Society, you will be a part of a group that is dedicated to supporting cancer research. If you have already included The V Foundation in your estate plans or you [...]

Could this weekend get any better?

March Madness has begun and there is nothing like leaving work on Thursday or Friday and heading to the local sports bar to watch the games and have a beer. Throw St. Patrick’s Day in there and I’m not sure if there is anything that could be more fun.  Well, maybe you throw a house party. You get about three or four televisions in one room and have different games on each one (we did this for my birthday during football season, highly recommended!) Either way, you know there is going to be some beer around. And if there is [...]

Remember the run in 1983? We do!

It’s March Madness!  I don’t know about you but I love this time of year. There is nothing like a good, old-fashioned tournament to determine a National Champion. What a concept! This week 68 teams will begin competing for the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship. Yet, sometimes when the announcers start talking about “Cinderella” stories, you can’t help to think about one of the original “Cinderella” stories. What makes Coach Valvano’s 1983 National Championship run so “Cinderella” like to me is that of the six games, four of the games were won by two or less.   First North Carolina [...]

Our Future is in Good Hands

Recently, The V Foundation celebrated its 19th birthday. CEO Nick Valvano stated that we are like a kid heading off to college, only we know what our major is. A few years ago, Richard Deans thought he knew what his major was, but he had no idea that his first job in a research lab would end up shaping his future.  Richard Deans, a North Carolina State University Park Scholar, knew that undergraduate research was important for graduate school from the moment he stepped foot on campus. He found a professor who took undergraduate students and began working in an [...]

Yes, We’re Going There!

Colorectal Cancer.  Yes. I said it. There are some types of cancer people just don’t want to talk about. And if you think people don’t want to talk about colon cancer, they really don’t want to talk about the best way to prevent it. A recent study by the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York showed that having a colonoscopy cuts the risk of death from colon cancer in half. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine and you can find CBS.com’s article about it here. For the past two decades, death from colorectal cancer [...]
