National College Football Day, observed on the first Saturday of November, was created by the AT&T Cotton Bowl as a way to pay tribute to a significant moment in our nation’s history. On Nov. 6, 1869, Rutgers defeated Princeton, 6-4. More importantly, those college athletes left a lasting legacy that would evolve into the great spectacle of football. In 2006, the holiday took on added significance when the Classic teamed up with The V Foundation for Cancer Research. We’re so fortunate to have the support of these organizations!

These grants are for 2 years and $200,000 and are designed to identify, retain and further the careers of young investigators. This unique funding process provides the essential funds to the facility, earmarked for the individual doctor, allowing the V Scholar to decide how best to use these funds in his or her research project. We recently lost a dear friend to this terrible disease, Anthony Negrin. We became acquainted with Anthony through the Dick Vitale Gala. After a courageous battle with Fanconi anemia, Anthony lost his battle with cancer on October 6th at age 19. We designated the V Scholar grant given to Dr. Azam Mohammad at Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital in memory of Anthony Negrin. Anthony was treated by Dr. Stella Davies and Dr. Pirinda Metha at Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital. We will keep Anthony’s memory alive through Dr. Mohammad’s work.
