PEGGY FLEMING JOINS V BOARD OF DIRECTORS
August 17, 2003 Peggy Fleming Jenkins has accepted a position as a member of The V Foundation Board of Directors. The announcement was made at The Foundation's August board of directors meeting. As a V Board member she will help set policy as well as develop programs to enhance fundraising opportunities, cancer awareness and linkages to The Foundation. Ms Fleming is best remembered for her Olympic gold medal in figure skating at the 1968 Winter Olympic Games in Grenoble, France. In 1981, she joined the ABC Sports broadcast team that had followed her skating career since she was a young girl. Her 21 years as an on-air analyst with ABC Sports have taken her to both the Sarajevo and Calgary Olympics, and she continues to provide commentary for both national and international events. She has starred in five television specials, one of which won two Emmy Awards. She has been invited to the White House by four different administrations, and in 1980, she was the first skater invited to perform there. She has received the Babe Didrickson Zaharias Award and has been inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, the United States Figure Skating Association Hall of Fame, and the Women's Sports Foundation Hall of Fame. In 1999 Peggy was honored at the Sports Illustrated 20th Century Awards. She was in an elite group of seven named "Athletes Who Changed the Game" which included Arnold Palmer, Billie Jean King, and Jackie Robinson. In the midst of four decades of career changes, she has worked to maintain her priorities. The lifelong lessons Peggy learned as a young skater helped shape the image she presents today. She says she is grateful to have found a sport that strengthened not only her body, but her spirit as well. A cancer survivor, Peggy has been married since 1970 to Dr. Greg Jenkins. They have two sons, Andy and Todd, and one grandchild and live in the San Francisco Bay area. |
